I awoke, the fur up on my neck, the instant I saw a shadow slinking along the glass outside. A low growl rumbled my chest as I watched the shadow scale up the side of the hothouse and reach for the window latch. With a scratching sound, the glass pressed open, and a dark face with black eyes peered around for a moment.
I knew the scent from earlierâthis was the animal that had upset my Wenling! The moment it slithered inside and dropped to the floor, I was in full voice. My outraged barking made Wenling sit upright. âLacey!â
I kept barking and dragged myself toward the startled creature. Wenling sprang to her feet and waved something that threw off a beam of light. The animalâs eyes glowed. It sprang to the wall and hastily climbed straight up, lifting the window and vanishing out through the gap.
âOkay, Lacey. You did it! You scared away the raccoon. You can stop barking!â Wenling told me.
I felt pretty sure she wanted me to continue to bark until the animalâs scent faded from the air. The light in her hand went out. âOkay! Enough!â
This Okay probably meant âKeep barking!â
âLacey!â Wenling bent over and, with a grunt, hoisted me into the air. I was instantly silentâno self-respecting dog would ever bark while being held off the ground. âGood dog!â
I loved that I was a good dog, and I loved being held to Wenlingâs chest.
âLetâs try to go back to sleep. It might come back. In the morning, Iâll figure out a way to lock all the windows,â Wenling whispered.
We went back to the blankets on the floor. Before we could settle down, however, a white flash of light swept across the glass walls. Soon, a bright spot of illumination was bobbing along out in the snow.
Someone was coming.
âUh-oh,â Wenling murmured.
